U.S. rapper Freddie Gibbs has dropped his well-anticipated album “Fetti” with fellow U.S. rapper Curren$y. “Fetti” was entirely produced by producer The Alchemist, who has produced for hip-hop greats Mobb Deep, and most recently Action Bronson (who you might know for his Munchies food series, “Fuck that’s delicious” premiering on Vice).
Freddie Gibbs has made four critically acclaimed solo studio albums, but is perhaps best known for his collaborative project with legendary producer Madlib, as MadGibbs, entitled “Piñata”. Madlib is regarded as one of the best hip hop producers of the last decade, consistently delivering top notch material. Madlib’s seminal work is his collaborative project with New York rapper MF DOOM, entitled Madvillainy. Madvillainy received huge critical praise, boasting a 93/100 from Metacritic and a huge 9.4/10 from Pitchfork. On “Piñata”, Gibb’s rough flow slotted seamlessly into Madlib’s smooth and jazzy beats, and saw the culmination of his rise to fame.
Curren$y rose to fame as one of the original members of labels founded by Lil Wayne, Young Money Entertainment and Birdman’s Cash Money Records. Since, Curren$y has been prolific in his releases, releasing 12 mixtapes in 2016 alone.
Rumours of “Fetti” first surfaced in January 2017 through an Instagram post by Curren$y, and almost 2 years later the project has finally come to fruition. Clocking in at just under 24 minutes, “Fetti” features slick rhymes and smooth beats. Curren$y’s laid back style comes through throughout the project, with Gibb’s dipping in and out in the project’s more energetic moments.
The release of “Fetti” is coupled with some massive news: Freddie Gibbs and Madlib’s hugely anticipated follow up to “Piñata” will release in 2019. The project “Bandana”, will feature many of the beats Madlib auditioned for Kanye West’s seventh studio album “The Life of Pablo” but didn’t make the final cut.
As of now no concrete release date is set, but we certainly can’t wait.
